A Local Guides Us Through Mahia

A summers’ day spent in Northern Hawke’s Bay is always a day well spent. And the drive to Wairoa is always a scenic one. But today will be something special. After a slap-up morning tea in Wairoa, beside the river, we’ll continue north to collect our special guest at Nūhaka. Local identity Arthur Bowen has lived in this part of Hawke’s Bay forever. What he doesn’t know about the history and goings-on of the local area isn’t worth knowing. Arthur will come aboard the coach and regale us with fun facts and stories about Nūhaka and Mahia as we head towards our lunch destination, the Rocket Café in Mahia (which just happens to be run by Arthur’s sister, Janey). After lunch we’ll head for the beach, slip our shoes off, and feel the warm sand between our toes as we enjoy a gentle wander.
