In the second of our Big Day Out series we’re heading to the spectacular Orakei Korako Geothermal Park a little north of Taupo. This hidden valley not only contains some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world, but also boasts the most active geysers of any geothermal park in New Zealand. Up to 23 natural geysers play freely through the area, which is constantly changing. We’ll marvel at the vibrant colours all around us and have the option to take a native bush walk through the untouched geothermal paradise. After a morning cuppa on the shores of Lake Taupo, we’ll arrive at Orakei Korako around midday. After lunch in the Mudcake Café you’re free to explore the park by taking the short ferry ride across the lake from the Visitor Centre. The boats don’t run to a timetable. You simply summons one on either side by pushing a button. This gives each person the flexibility to wander for as long or as little as they feel like. Before we head home, we’ll stop in at Huka Honey Hive at Wairakei for a look around. Orakei Korako is often overlooked when people think of geothermal experiences but this hidden valley is simply stunning. Come and join us for a special day.
