In this latest edition of Ken’s favourite Day Trips, we’re combining two of the most enthusiastically received destinations we’ve ever included. After morning tea at Wharewaka Point, we follow the eastern side of the lake to Tūrangi and the Tongariro National Trout Centre. Anglers come from all over the world to fish Rainbow Trout. We’re taken on a guided tour of the Trout Centre where the breeding programmes are helping to keep the rivers stocked. Then we retrace our steps back to north of Taupō and our second destination, Timberline Kennels and their Racing Siberian Huskies.
Here Steve and Taniya Coxhead have been training Huskies as sled dogs for 25 years. They’ll share their knowledge of these wonderful working dogs with us. We’ll get to meet the dogs and watch an 8-dog team in action, working and running together with seemingly endless energy as they pull a quadbike around an 800m track. You’ll be smitten with these graceful animals. What a diverse and fascinating Big Day Out.
