What's Included

There are few things more heartening for a rural community than the resurrection of a lost hub that’s been long closed. October 2025 saw the re-opening of one of the central North Island’s most iconic hotels. The New Argyle in Hunterville began its life in 1885 and the current Art Deco building went up in 1947. Like so many pubs in country towns, The New Argyle endured a slow decline over recent decades and closed its doors in 2022. When the property came up for sale in 2024 a group of locals clubbed together and bought it with the aim of creating a gathering place more suited to contemporary needs. After more than a year of restoration and renovation The New Argyle is, once again, not only feeding and watering the locals, but welcoming visitors and passers-by as well. And in addition to the restaurant, bar and garden, three retail shops have been tenanted as well. Remaining in community ownership, the project is a testament to what can be achieved with local commitment and a clear vision. Join us for a delightful day trip as we journey over the ‘Gentle Annie’ to show our support for The New Argyle with a group lunch in this wonderful new venture – and perhaps a wee look in the shops as well.

After lunch, we continue to Feilding for a sweet treat at Groovy Scoops — an old-fashioned ice cream parlour serving up smiles and scoops in equal measure – before we return to the Bay via the new road to Woodville.

The re-opening of The New Argyle is a good news story of a community reversing the trend of declining smalltown facilities. We can’t wait to check it out.

Places for lunch are limited so don’t wait too long to book your place.
