What's Included

Here at Bay Tours we’re so thrilled when we get the opportunity to introduce a local enterprise that is a rising star in its field.

Out the back of the Tukituki Valley, behind Havelock North is a farming venture with a difference that’s picking up awards and causing a stir. Craggy Range Sheep Dairy is the brainchild of James and Kate Clairmont and they, and their young family, milk 200 French dairy-breed ewes every day with the aim being the production of various delicious cheeses. Sheep milk is naturally homogenised, contains almost twice as much calcium and much more protein and amino acids than cow’s milk. And at last year’s National Cheese Awards their cheeses scooped an incredible FIVE trophies. After morning tea at Te Awanga Domain, we’ll take the picturesque drive along the Tukituki River and up Craggy Range Road to their farm where, firstly, James will introduce us to his beloved milking ewes and show us around the specially built milking shed. We’ll see where the cheese-making magic happens and then make our way up to the homestead where Kate will welcome us for a tasting of their handcrafted, award-winning cheeses. There will be a chance to purchase anything that appeals.

From here we make our way to the excellent No.5 Café & Larder, known for its warm hospitality and country-style menu, for a delicious lunch. We finish the day with a visit to the popular Te Mata Figs, where Helen and Murray will share the story behind their homegrown fig products – complete with a tasty sample, of course!

This will be a day of new discoveries and of showcasing the high quality produce our region has in abundance. It’ll be popular so don’t hesitate to book your place.
