This classic tour has become a Bay Tours institution. Journey through the vast backcountry of New Zealand’s largest farm—Molesworth Station—and neighbouring Rainbow Station. These two giants of the South Island offer rugged landscapes, alpine lakes, and fascinating glimpses into Kiwi farming life. Based in the charming alpine village of Hanmer Springs, you’ll enjoy the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
Day 1: Fly from Hawke’s Bay to Christchurch, where our long-time local guide, Ross Carter of Molesworth Tours, greets us. With 40 years’ experience and a decade of guiding Bay Tours groups, Ross takes us north to Woodchester Station. Hosted by the Kelly family, we witness firsthand the lasting impact of the Kaikōura earthquake. In the afternoon, we arrive at Drifter’s Inn, our welcoming Hanmer Springs base for the next four nights.
Day 2: We explore Molesworth Station by 4WD, travelling through the Clarence Valley, over Jack’s Pass, and visiting landmarks like the Acheron Accommodation House and Isolated Flat. With sweeping views, riverbeds dotted with cattle, geese, and paradise ducks, and cob homesteads, the scale and raw beauty of the station is unforgettable.
Day 3: Enjoy a FREE DAY in Hanmer Springs. Relax in the famous thermal pools, take a bush walk, or explore the historic Queen Mary Hospital grounds. We regroup for a shared dinner tonight.
Day 4: Another 4WD adventure, this time through the stunning Rainbow Station. We journey past Lake Tennyson and over Island Pass—the country’s highest—taking in spectacular views and diverse terrain. Rainbo w’s 20,500 acres are rich in natural contrast, with its blend of sheep, cattle, rivers, and forested ridges.
Day 5: We return to Christchurch, stopping en route at the Iron Ridge Sculpture Park, a unique art experience in a former quarry. After a late lunch, we fly back to Hawke’s Bay.
These iconic stations are steeped in the spirit of the land—of shepherds, stockmen, and wide-open skies. This is a rare opportunity to see a remote and authentic slice of New Zealand life. Spaces are limited—book now to avoid disappointment.
