This classic tour has become a Bay Tours institution. Journey through the vast backcountry of New Zealand’s largest farm—Molesworth Station—and neighbouring Rainbow Station. These two giants of the South Island high country offer rugged landscapes, alpine lakes, and fascinating glimpses into remote farming life. Based in the charming alpine village of Hanmer Springs, you’ll enjoy the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.
Day 1: We fly from Napier to Christchurch, where our long-time local guide, Ross Carter of Molesworth Tours, greets us. We’ve enjoyed Ross and his company guiding us into these huge inland stations for more than a decade. Ross first takes us north to Woodchester Station near Mt Lyford. Hosted by the Kelly family for lunch, we witness first-hand the lasting impact on their farm of the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. In the afternoon, we arrive at Drifter’s Inn, our welcoming Hanmer Springs base for the next four nights.
Day 2: We explore the vast Molesworth Station by 4WD, travelling over Jack’s Pass, across the Clarence Valley and visiting landmarks like the historic Acheron Accommoda tion House and Isolated Flat. With sweeping vistas across landscapes dotted with cob homesteads and river valleys with cattle, Canada geese, and paradise ducks, the scale and raw beauty of the station are unforgettable.
Day 3: Enjoy a FREE DAY in Hanmer Springs. Relax in the famous thermal pools, take a bush walk, or explore the historic Queen Mary Hospital grounds. We regroup for a shared dinner tonight.
Day 4: Another 4WD adventure, this time through the stunning Rainbow Station. We climb past Lake Tennyson and over Island Pass — the country’s highest pass — taking in spectacular views and diverse terrain. Rainbow’s 20,500 acres are rich in natural contrast, with its blend of sheep, cattle, rivers, forested ridges and alpine flora.
Day 5: We return to Christchurch, but first we stop at the Iron Ridge Sculpture Park, a unique art experience in a former quarry. After a late lunch, we fly north and home.
These iconic stations are steeped in the spirit of a Kiwi high country that’s still the domain of shepherds, stockmen, horses and dogs.
