What's Included

Since 1974 Nga Manu Nature Reserve on the Kapiti Coast has been a cornerstone for the conservation of New Zealand’s natural heritage. Whilst its big brother, Kapiti Island, is widely known, Nga Manu quietly protects one of the last remnants of coastal lowlands swamp forest in the country. Officially opened to the public in 1981, the 35-acre wildlife reserve offers visitors an immersive experience of our native flora and fauna, inspiring efforts in conservation and education. On this 2 Day tour we’ll experience guided encounters with New Zealand’s native birds in their natural environment.

Our first day begins with a scenic drive south, stopping for lunch at the ever-popular Viv’s Kitchen in Sanson, before making our way down the Himatangi Straights, through Horowhenua to the Kapiti Coast and our overnight accommodation at the luxurious Raumati Sands Resort. After a seaside dinner at the Waterfront Bar & Kitchen, we make our way to Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, where our special Kiwi Night Encounter begins. Guided by the knowledgeable Rangers, we’ll venture into the Reserve after dark with an intimate and unforgettable opportunity to observe these fascinating nocturnal birds.

After a refreshing night’s sleep and breakfast we return to Ngā Manu where, again led by the Rangers, we’ll have a Native Bird Close Encounter where we’ll meet the cheeky Kaka, the flamboyant Kakariki, playful Kea and unique Whio (Blue Duck). We’ll have the opportunity to feed these amazing birds, gaining insights into their behaviours and habitats. This hands-on encounter is a unique chance to connect with the avian wildlife in the safety of the Reserve. Afterwards we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the beautiful reserve grounds. After lunch we begin our journey home, but with one more charming stop to make when we enjoy a Devonshire Tea at the elegant homestead of Wharerata on the outskirts of Palmerston North.

Join us for a rare opportunity to experience the New Zealand bush after dark, and meet some of our most treasured native creatures up close in their natural surroundings. Limited to 10 places, book now so you don’t miss out!
